What are Reference Intakes (RI) and how do they differ from %DV?

Reference Intakes (RI) are the UK equivalent of US %Daily Values. The UK RI is based on a 2,000 kcal adult diet. Key UK RI values: total fat 70 g, saturates 20 g, carbohydrates 260 g, sugars 90 g, protein 50 g, salt 6 g. These differ from both the US FDA %DV and EU reference values. What is HFSS scoring and who needs it?

HFSS stands for High in Fat, Sugar, and Salt. The UK uses the Nutrient Profile Model (UK NPM) to score food products. Products scoring 4+ (food) or 1+ (drinks) are classified HFSS and face advertising restrictions in England — particularly on TV before 9pm and online.
